So far, I haven’t really got round to addressing the topic
of energy that I started back in December, but few reports have caught my eye
over the past week which have some exciting implications for the alternative
energy sector!
Halophytes. Taen from: http://cleantechnica.com |
On the 22nd of January at the sustainablity living week in Abu Dhabi, Boeings Darrin Morgan
revealed that their 10 year biofuel program has finally delivered the goods. The
fuel in question is produced from halophytes – that is salt-loving plants, which
grow in the desert! With 20% of land-cover being desert and 97% of water being
salty, this is a seriously exciting prospect. Of course there will be waste
from production but Boeing are looking into synergies similar to those implemented
by the Sahara Forest Project. Take a look at the exclusive report for more
information.
The Iceland Deep Drilling Project. Taken from: http://iddp.is/ |
The second good news story for energy is slightly more
underground and just as alternative. Geothermic’s special report from January, focussed on the Iceland deep drilling project and their serendipitous
encounter with magma. Firstly expected to be a failure, the drilling accident
which hit a magma pocket, ended up becoming the world hottest producing
geothermal well. It is measured to be able to produce 36MW; not much in the
grand scheme of things but this is just the beginning! Here is a longer articleon the subject – it is well worth a read.
